DESIGN NOTES

   Chiesa Diruta

Chiesa diruta, as a forgotten church built in the 15th century, has existed in the hearts of people in Grottole in another form after hundreds of years of changes. From the original religious belief building to the place of gathering and social activities of the town residents, it has become a unique landmark in the town, which can always arouse people's memories of the past. It is a unique memory treasure of Grottole, which is worth preserving and protecting.

We hope that after the regeneration of the church, it will be a bright light for the culture and art of the town, the best place for the town residents to gather, celebrate and socialize, and a concert hall with unique charm.

We plan to preserve and repair the original ruins of the church, and implant the function of outdoor concert hall in the ground part. Taking the dome area as the stage, the mountains on the west side as the background, and the open area on the east side creates the audience area with the oval dome symbol, the niches on both sides are used as the equipment and storage area, and the ear room on the south side is the accompaniment area of the outdoor concert hall. An oval air stage is set on the upper part of the dome area, which can be performed in the air during special festivals. At night, it will form a bright and dark pure white aperture, as if the building is breathing. The North inner courtyard is transformed into the upper entrance hall and ticket center, with roof garden on the top and skylights full of modeling and rhythm. Steel ladders are set up in the East Tower. People can climb up to the top of the tower, and then along the plank road in the upper part of the north side to watch the ruins of the church, the panoramic view of Grottole and the surrounding mountains. They can also reach the air stage and the top of the ear room in the south side, and have a beautiful view.

The main entrance square is set along the road on the west side, and the outdoor lecture area and rest area are set on both sides. The original arched entrance is transformed into the main entrance of the concert hall, and people enter the main hall from then on. At the top of the main hall, a unique skylight is formed by making use of the original structural loopholes to shed mottled light. On the south side of the main hall is the artists' lounge, on the north side is the bar area, and then on the inner side enter the audience lounge and the modeling stairs connected with the upper ticket hall. The central part of this floor is a concert hall which can hold 150 people, which is composed of stage, accompaniment area and audience area. The whole hall is set in the underground part of the Church Center. The newly built one is a light colored and smooth interface, which forms an organic fusion with the original church ruins interface.

In the architectural modeling space and appearance design, the main principle is to maintain the original style of the church building, and the transformation design is carried out in the way of reducing and integrating the outdoor part of the building as far as possible. The decorative metal plate is used as the main material to form the echo and coordination with the original exterior wall of the church ruins. In the outdoor stage part, wood and light color smooth stone are used as the main materials to intervene in the space design in a weak way. The air stage and two niches in the dome are made of mirror stainless steel to set off the surrounding buildings. When someone enters the space, an interesting interaction between people and buildings will be formed.

In the interior space of the building, we think more about using light color and smooth material elements to intervene in the interface of some relics, so as to form the analogy between new and old, rough and delicate, historical and modern, and create more dramatic space atmosphere.
